Women’s health physiotherapy refers to the management of conditions specifically affecting women during all stages of life, but particularly the assessment and treatment of a variety of pelvic floor, incontinence and pregnancy related conditions. Incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction are most commonly due to weakness of the pelvic floor muscles, which can be weakened by; pregnancy and childbirth, changes in hormone levels at menopause, constipation, a chronic cough and being overweight/unfit.

Womens HealthIf you have any of the following problems, a continence and pelvic floor assessment may be able to help:

  • Difficulty doing pelvic floor muscle exercises
  • Pelvic pain (men and women)
  • Bowel incontinence or constipation
  • Bladder incontinence problems
    (leakage, difficulty holding)
  • Symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse
    (dragging, heaviness, bulging)
  • Scheduled for surgery
(prior to or after gynaecological or urological surgery)
  • Or if you are just aiming to prevent future problems, especially during or after pregnancy, after menopause or at any stage in life

Aches and pains throughout pregnancy and postnatally can be quite stressful. The hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, as well as the physical demands of caring for a newborn make you more susceptible to the following conditions:

  • Pelvic pain – sacroiliac joint and pubic symphysis instability
  • Back, coccyx and neck pain
  • Abdominal muscle separation
  • Carpal Tunnel or wrist pain
  • De Quervain’s Tendonitis

Treatment services we provide include:

  • Individual tailored programs for pelvic floor muscles, abdominal muscles and maintaining general fitness during and after pregnancy, perimenopause or post menopause
  • General health and fitness advice
  • Pre- surgery education and strengthening programs
  • Post surgical rehabilitation including management of scarring and pain
  • Biofeedback training
  • Bladder retraining and urge control strategies
